MV Sycamore
THE CLIENT
A globally recognised shipbuilding group with extensive operations in both commercial and defence maritime sectors operating in Australia. There key capabilities are operations support, supply and maintenance support, engineering support, Australian crewing and training. As part of its commitment to asset lifecycle support, the client engaged IKAD to assist with major retrofit works on the MV Sycamore, a vessel moored in Sydney.
BRIEF
As part of the replacement of both lifeboat davits removal of existing davit foundations, pipework and power units were required prior to reconfiguring the vessel in order to accept an upgraded davit system. The reconfiguration required major structural and stiffening works to support the higher weights of the new davits. These new larger davits also allowed for the use of RHIB’s in lieu of life boats which gave the vessel greater capability.
PLANNING FOR SUCCESS
IKAD established a clear project pathway from the outset, built around end-to-end in-house delivery. The fabrication and manufacturing took place at IKAD’s Perth and Sydney facilities, allowing for complete control over quality, schedule, and logistics. A coordinated interface was maintained between IKAD’s respective teams in Perth and Sydney ensuring the seamless execution of the project at HMAS Kuttabul.
OUR APPROACH
IKAD managed all aspects of the project lifecycle, from quoting through to fabrication, transport, installation and painting. Advanced in-house capabilities; including CNC-equipped machining, precision plate and pipe cutting, and structured quality assurance processes were leveraged to deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes. A planning strategy was applied to prioritise and sequence work efficiently. Immediate issues were addressed promptly onsite, while longer-lead items were fabricated concurrently in Perth and Sydney.
WHAT THE CLIENT RECEIVED
The client received upgraded davits that allowed for the use of RHIB’s in lieu of life boats giving this vessel greater capabilities especially for the training it conducts with the Australian navy. IKAD’s ability to deliver complex solutions across locations reinforced trust and capability in the partnership. IKAD has since returned to the vessel for further upgrades, reflecting the success of the initial works.
MOVING FORWARD
The MV Sycamore project highlights IKAD’s ability to deliver complex marine engineering outcomes under tight constraints. By combining deep industry experience with modern facilities and responsive project management, IKAD continues to support this client through follow-up works and future collaboration opportunities through all vessels operated by the client. The project is a strong example of IKAD’s value as a long-term partner for naval and maritime asset sustainment solutions.
