Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment

THE CLIENT

The Town of Broome engaged a specialist contractor to deliver a landmark public infrastructure project along one of Western Australia’s most iconic coastlines.

The Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment required fabricated structures that could meet the highest architectural and structural standards while withstanding the demands of a harsh coastal environment.

BRIEF

IKAD was engaged to fabricate a series of unique architectural walkway ramps, platforms, and stairways as part of the Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment Stage 2. All structural elements were required to be fabricated from duplex stainless steel; a premium-grade material chosen for its exceptional corrosion resistance and suitability for coastal exposure. The finished steelwork would remain unpainted, placing enormous pressure on fabrication quality. Every surface had to meet an architectural mirror finish, with zero tolerance for scratches, grinding marks, or weld defects of any kind.

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS

This was not a project for the faint-hearted. The decision to fabricate every structural member from individual plates meant that IKAD had to develop quality weld procedures specifically for duplex stainless steel before a single component could be produced.

Managing heat input and controlling distortion throughout the fabrication process were critical challenges that demanded meticulous planning, highly skilled personnel, and unwavering attention to detail at every stage.

The scope of the challenge was reflected in the fact that multiple other fabrication companies declined to tender, and a separate contractor who was awarded Stage 1 ultimately could not deliver; returning to the client and relinquishing the work back to IKAD.

OUR APPROACH

IKAD’s team brought together deep technical expertise in exotic material fabrication, precision welding, and architectural finishing to deliver a result that others could not.

Developing procedures, qualifying welders, and establishing strict quality controls; the team fabricated each structural component to exact tolerances while maintaining the flawless surface finish required. The absence of any post-fabrication coating meant that quality had to be built in from the very first weld, with no margin for remediation.

A culture of keen eye for detail and craftsmanship were central to IKAD’s ability to see both stages through to completion.

WHAT THE CLIENT RECEIVED

The client received fully fabricated walkway ramps, platforms, and stairways that met both the structural requirements and the exacting architectural standards of this high-profile public project. The completed structures form a permanent and prominent feature of the Cable Beach foreshore; a testament to what is achievable when technical capability, skilled trades, and a commitment to quality come together.

Having successfully delivered Stage 1 in 2024, IKAD went on to complete Stage 2, delivering a consistent and exceptional result across both phases of the project.

MOVING FORWARD

The Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment has been nominated for an industry award; recognition that reflects not only the scale and complexity of the project, but the quality of the outcome. IKAD’s involvement across both stages of this landmark project reinforces our position as the fabricator of choice for complex, high-specification work that demands more than standard capability.

Stage 1 of the project won the Master Builders 2025 best Civil/Infrastructure category under $25m. Stages 1 & 2 are being entered into their respective ASSDA award category in the next month.

We look forward to sharing more details about this with you soon.
